TORU ELECTRIC KETTLE
TORU ELECTRIC KETTLE
Designed by Nendo
“Toru” means “through” in Japanese and Nendo's creative imagination turns the handle of this unprecedented electric kettle into a spout, which runs playfully through the steel volume of the body.
DESIGNER
Nendo took on designing the Olympic Cauldron used in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and select works that Nendo has been involved in designing are featured in museums around the world, such as New York’s Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Victoria Albert Museum, and more.
Nendo is working on the design of the TGV French high-speed train and serves as the Executive Producer and Designer for the Japanese Government Pavilion (Japan Pavilion) at the 2025 World Exposition (Osaka, Kansai, Japan).

Toru, the stainless-steel appliance series designed by Nendo for Alessi, is a wonderful expression of the skill and care with which the company handles this material. “Toru” means “through” in Japanese and is a subtle reference to the black, tube-like elements that characterise the various objects in the collection. These elements fit elegantly into the stainless-steel body, acting sometimes as a spout, sometimes as a handle, to create a composition of cleverly ironic volumes.
